In the eight years before 2017, the number of banks operating in Puerto Rico fell from nine to five.¹ Businesses of every kind saw their income streams interrupted or disappear because of the destruction caused by the hurricanes. These factors and others made it difficult for small and medium size employers to access cash in the months following the storms and put the livelihoods of thousands of families at further risk.
The Economic RSF initiated partnerships and creative mechanisms to deliver cash to the private sector, so businesses could start on the road to recovery faster.
