Integrated Caribbean
Economic Recovery Strategy
On November 2, 2019, the Economic Development Administration invited key stakeholders to meet for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Puerto Rico and the University of the Virgin Islands and to mark the historic agreement as the official launching of the BLUEtide Initiative. As an economic recovery and resilience strategy for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Economic RSF designed the BLUEtide Initiative to integrate and promote ocean-dependent industries and ecosystems in a cohesive effort to bolster economic growth, improve quality of life for residents, and enhance the visitors’ experience.
Anchored in an ocean economy framework, the Economic RSF’s vision is an interdisciplinary, regional approach to developing coastal resources for the purpose of meeting measurable outcomes in disaster mitigation and resilience, workforce development, advanced manufacturing, and tourism. Increasing international competitiveness can diversify economic drivers and mitigate future hurricane damage for the region. Investing in science, data, and technology supports ocean-dependent industries and stakeholders to create and deploy innovative solutions that place the U.S. Caribbean at the forefront of multiple burgeoning global industries that will support a skilled 21st century workforce.
